For many years I attended KKNK in Oudtshoorn. Johnnie was a street busker. Originally, he played a “blik guitar”, a home made guitar created from an oil can, very popular with locals.

In the early days of Cape Town the slaves were relieved of their duties and allowed to celebrate New Year on 2nd January by singing and dancing. They made elaborate silk outfits for the occasion. This tradition became a competion, prestigious event, which is still practiced. The minstrel troops compete against one another across Cape Town.
