Statement

I did not always paint or draw.  I was the child who always put my exercise book into the middle of the pile at school in the hope that teacher will not hold it up in front of the class and humiliate me.  My favourite hobbies are travelling, photography and creating art.

Life has been good to me – it has given, and it has taken.  Some years ago, following my divorce I was able to buy a house, my home.  I was very keen to buy a large print of tulips to decorate my lounge, however, I decided against the purchase.  I decided I could use the money for art lessons and produce my very own décor.  It took about 5 years and many lonely nights before I signed up for art lessons at the age of 46.  First drawing then painting.  I am grateful for the encouraging teachers I have had the privilege of learning from at lessons, workshops and parttime courses. Art has become my favourite hobby.  I have never painted those tulips, yet I don’t have enough space on my walls for all my exhibits. I have spent a lot more money on lessons and supplies than the cost of that tulip print!

From a young age I enjoyed many hobbies and crafts including candle making, crocheting, sewing or batik.  My husband, Marc, and I share an interest in photography.  Since I retired from mechanical draughting Marc and I regularly travel locally packing in our cameras and some art supplies.

I love the beauty and vibrancy of Cape Town and South Africa, its people, animals and it’s diverse culture. I refer to my art as “moments in time” as many of my exhibits are done en plein air or from my own photographs.  Painting from my own photographs allows me the opportunity to relive the sights and smells, emotion, culture and beauty of special moments in my life. Marc is my #1 fan. The countless mugs of tea Marc makes for me while I create, his gentle critique and support are invaluable to me. I often create art en plein air.  Goodness knows how many hours Marc has spent sleeping alongside me in the car while I paint outdoors, enjoying the fresh air absorbed in the beauty around me.

My happy place must be a canvas on my easel, brush in hand and paint on my palette… and often hands, face and clothes!
